Dear Mr. President,
Today in Dallas a paramedic with the Fire-Rescue Dept. was
shot. I don't know if he is dead or
alive because it is still an "active" situation and the shooter has
not been caught. I'm sure once the
situation is contained more information will be released, but isn't it enough
to know that a first responder, an innocent and neutral party who was just on
the scene to help, was shot? Isn't that
enough to make you think that there are too many guns out there?
In the United States over 50% of suicides are committed with
a firearm and one of the most vulnerable populations is our Veterans. There is
one Veteran suicide every 80 seconds in this country! This means that the 6,500 or so Veteran
suicides logged in one year are more than the total body count from the Iraq and
Afghanistan wars combined (2001-2011). Benefit
claims are falling for our Veterans.
PTSD services are harder and harder to get. VA hospitals are understaffed and
overbooked. And most Veterans own a
gun. This is a recipe for disaster which
will only be exacerbated by your administration's touting a free-for-all gun
policy where everyone is armed and there are no thoughts of the consequences.
Luckily there are programs such as the one at the VA which
offers free gun locks to Veterans. And there
are thousands of friends and families of victims of mass shootings all over
this country working tirelessly for some kind of reasonable and sane gun
control so that what happened to them doesn't happen to someone else.
There is just no good reason for most Americans to be
armed. It only leads to more shootings,
more death, and more tragedies. Enough is enough.
Sincerely,
